The Punting & Picnic Tea Party

On Sunday 14th August, I teamed with the lovely guys at letsgopunting.co.uk to provide a peaceful and relaxing version of The Secluded Tea Party - The Punting & Picnic Tea Party.

It was exactly this... My 12 guests were met at a secret spot by the lovely Caroline and she pointed them in the direction of their river transport for the evening. They were then punted along the famous backs of the River Cam whilst not having to lift a finger... Simon did all the work, hurrah - A true gent : )
A Perfect way to end the weekend in anybody's eyes! (I did this tour myself with Mister Flay a while back... It was perfect with a glass of bubbles and a good catch up with the guys as well as scouting for a perfect picnic location for my fellow Tea Party Guests....)

We had decided that whilst my guests were being pampered and shown the glorious Cambridge Colleges and the beautiful grounds on their way through, I would be at the other end, in a (luckily sunny!) cow field near to the Mill Pond, (Not so!) gracefully setting up a picnic blanket and a feast for my guests to enjoy once they had reached the end of the river.

The prep for my menu had been so easy compared to the stresses of the cow field hehe... Not only had it threatened rain all weekend and then teased me by becoming gloriously warm and sunny this afternoon, but the cow field was full of...well... shockingly... cows ; )
A group of around 40-50 people had been enjoying a late afternoon picnic when I arrived, and the cows had decided to wander over and start going through their bags whilst I was throwing out Blankets and cushions and setting up my make shift table in the centre. In a comical moment, naturally, knowing my luck, they turned towards my feast and headed in my direction. But they were about to mess with the wrong Tea Party Hostess... I boldly started to shoo them away with my floor length dress as a flag... waving them away with my hands mixed with asking them to leave politely, they headed for the opposite side of the path and stayed away for the rest of the afternoon. Manners win every time...

In fact, whilst I was setting up my picnic table, I had lots of curious looks and tourists walking up to me asking if they could take photos and wanted to know what I was doing, so I reveled in telling them all about my events, of course.  I even had a couple of local policeman walk past and take a card before my guests arrived - how funny : )

My menu was a feast of dipping Ciabatta Breads with Smoked Olive Oil & Cranberry Infused Balsamic Vinegar as well as a wonderful Red Onion Marmalade made by my Jam lady, Crudites with a Home-made Garlic & Herb dip, Teapot shaped Fruit Scones with a dark Cinnamon Glaze (Served with Home-made Apple Sauce and Clotted Cream - A refreshingly delicious combination!) and a Mulberry & Gin Bakewell Slices (With the Mulberries being picked at Sidney Sussex College with my lovely Twitter friend Sarah and recipe courtesy of The British Larder)

I had also made a very tasty version of my Layer Cake, with a spreading of Forest Berry Jam and Freshly picked (And Huge!) Blackberries, again, with Sarah in her garden..you are a star, thank you!
The blackberries were mixed into the sponge mix before baking, which gave a beautiful colour as I cut into it, and the Vanilla Buttercream gave it the perfect light and creamy taste to end the picnic on a sugar high. I had two guests (Both with the name Rachel to make singing life easier ; ) with birthday celebrations, so in true British Style we all sang Happy Birthday to them and I gave them 2 candles each to blow out and get embarrassed over ; )

Of course, being in a meadow meant that we couldn't have tea as such, so I prepared lot's of traditional lemonade and presented it in polka dot-lidded jars with straws for easy and non-spill serving. They looked fab, and we topped them up with flavoured Iced Teas over Ice throughout the afternoon. Some guests even brought their own rum to spike their own Mojito flavoured Iced Teas (Courtesy of Tea Box Online!) which was very amusing to see... I love my naughty guests hehe... So long as they keep it in their own cups, I don't mind at all.

This tea party was relaxing and lot's of talk from the guests about their favourite places for cake and afternoon tea was a real eye opener... Thank you to everybody for the suggestions, all noted!

What I haven't really seen before is my guests all leaving at the same time and all walking off in completely different directions at the close of the tea party. It was such a surreal feeling seeing them all leave the blanket at the same time and literally head off in every direction possible... It felt, for the very first time, like a really secret, clandestine event and it put a smile on my face to know that just for 2 hours we sat and drank tea, ate cake and talked around a picnic blanket to strangers we wouldn't normally have met in life otherwise. Success for me is this very feeling. And knowing that after all that washing up and heavy lifting after the event, I will sleep well for the next 3 days!

That is exactly what The Secluded Tea Party is all about....

Until next time.

The Gramophone

After a few recent requests for these dusty yet fashionable players of music... well, I have found a brand new fascination and love to pour my hours of wasted Google and Pinterest time into...

The Gramophone.

And whilst researching these most beautiful musical boxes, I have been enjoying the very intriguing and extremely smile-inducing playlist provided by The Shellac Sisters, a group of four glamourous retro girlies who dress to impress and play music from the 1920's right through to the 1950's... They are Wind-Up Gramophone DJs and I can't help but log onto their site every time I want to get into a vintage mind set, I feel myself singing along at my desk even if not alone - You can listen to a select playlist to get a feel for what they could do for your event... however big or small it might be.
They even provide dance lessons along to the music to really give you the vintage experience. I am in love with these ladies and I haven't even met them... yet!... Hopefully I will one day very soon. They have some dance moves to teach an Afternoon Tea Hostess with two left feet ; )

Not to bore you too much with history here... Hey, I got an E in GCSE History - I barely listened to a sentence of my nasty History Teacher at school, however NOW I get excited about the blinking past... Makes me wish I had paid a little more attention.. But never mind... I am slowly learning about the past through films, such as through my film idols, Mister Quentin Tarantino for example... Now WHAT a History Teacher he would have made!...  *Day Dreams for a moment or two*....

I digress.

The Phonograph was in fact the original name for this device and it was invented in 1877 by Thomas Alva Edison, a man who certainly had competition out there (Don't we all ; ) but who was granted the patent on his design because his design was the first to replicate the recorded sound - His design was in fact made to record sound onto a tin foil sheet phonograph cylinder.

Several changes were made in the 1880's by Alexander Graham Bell, including the use of wax-coated cardboard cylinders, and a cutting stylus that moved from side to side in a zig zag pattern over the record.
And then Emile Berliner initiated the transition from phonograph cylinders to gramophone records... the flat double-sided disc with a groove running from the edge in a spiral to the centre... This is what I now associate with Gramophones when they are mentioned, as would most people I presume.

In fact there is an argument to be found on Edisons reasons for inventing the phonograph... It seems his purpose was to find a way to record dictation in the office environment (Boring!), however Berliner was keen to push the Gramophone forward for entertainment and record producing purposes (Hurrah!).

Even the Grammy Awards are named and refers back to the old faithful Gramophone. A fact that in the grand scheme of things really doesn't matter, but I had taken completely for granted.

To be completely honest again, I think I need an entire year of being taught what music to look out for and add to a collection should I find myself a Gramophone for my own events.
The Shellac Sisters have helped relax me with their selection, so I am sure there is a starting point for us all on their playlists... My favourite by far... a classic that has ALWAYS put a smile on my face (Even when Christina ruined it in *Burlesque* ahem...) is of course the gorgeous
Always a great starting point in my mind.

Not only is the Gramophone a stroke of musical genius that kept households and parties entertained for years, but it has more recently been overtaken with such disgracefully technological advances such as the Cassette Player and most obviously the Compact Disc and now more Digital formats. I fear that the Gramophone is becoming a lost and forgotten treasure...

So please, just take a moment, remove your hat (or your hairpiece ; )  and nod to my latest need and desire for The Secluded Tea Party.... The Gramophone.

That Tesco Sandwich

Did you seen the Strawberries and Cream Sandwich that our nations favourite supermarket had made as an intriguing partner for this summers' Wimbledon?

It was a a clever little marketing tool in my eyes, and sold at only a £1 for this confusing little package.
I, of course headed round the corner to pick up one to try... Much to my Twitter and Facebook Friends' (And possibly even my own!) disgust hehe... I like to try these things, you should know this by now ; )

When I had heard about this sandwich, all I could think was that would actually sell well, surely?! - To be honest, I have no idea if it was indeed a big seller - Did you try it dear blog reader?

- If so, DO leave a comment with your thoughts on your experience with this sandwich delight?!...

Well, All the conversations I had about it online (Good old Social networking!) lead to the idea that in our heads we assumed the bread would be some sort of sweet bread such as a Brioche... which would actually appeal to most people it seems.
However, the bread was white poppy seed, and the seeded crunch was not really a very welcome texture in my opinion. It was strange. It didn't really taste of much, fairly slimy in the middle and very very sweet jam in the centre. I am not really sure I had much expectation with this filling, I was just being curious if I am honest with you.

What I did decide to do though, thanks to the lovely Tine at Cambridge Cookery School, was try out her fast Brioche Recipe as I had needed an excuse to try it for some time, and so I made my own version with a much tastier bread option... so here it is, my very own version of the Strawberries and Cream Sandwich, which was so easy to prepare and just delicious fresh from the oven... I can't rate this Brioche recipe enough and with the fresh Strawberries and a drizzle of cream, well.... Give it a go for yourself to see just how lovely it is!

FAST BRIOCHE RECIPE

200g SOFT unsalted butter
+40g caster sugar
+3 eggs=beaten
+500g strong flour
+10g fresh yeast
+1 teaspoon salt
+200ml milk.

Knead for 5 minutes

Place in fridge over night (12 Hours)

Line a Muffin tin and divide between 12 cases

Bake for 20min at 190C.

Serve warm with Freshly picked Strawberries and a drizzle of Single Cream... or even better... A Dollop of Clotted Cream.

Much Much nicer than anything the supermarkets can sell you!... well worth the baking!
